The past five months living with my Dad has been pretty great. One of our Father-son activities was to take a Beginner’s Hebrew class with Hannah Nesher.
On the side, I also begin reading How Biblical Languages Work by Peter James Silzer & Thomas John Finley. While learning more about Hebrew, it also has provided me a introduction to linguistics in general.
Last year before leaving for Europe, I began my application process for Wycliffe Canada. At the end of this month I am off to the orientation course for Wycliffe, which takes place at the CanIL building.
I applied for a summer linguistics course with CanIL, and low and behold I got in! It’s a little scary jumping into a third year University, and sad to leave everyone here. But overall I’m really excited, and feeling very blessed to have this opportunity. My brother says I have “chronic notice giving disease” because I’m leaving my well-salaried job yet again.
I’m not sure just how this will all fit together yet, but language is so foundational that what I learn will be applicable to many different things. Learning languages like Hebrew, writing and communication skills in English, computer programming (i.e. domain specific languages). Who knows, I could even end up working on Bible translation software, or continue studying linguistics to become a linguist. Time will tell, just one step at a time.
Tomorrow is my last day of work. Then I have some time to work on my Wycliffe application and study the two textbooks I already received. After that I’m off to beautiful Langley, B.C. with a possible stop-over in Calgary.
